10 Things to Write About in Your Next Letter (When You Think You Have Nothing to Say)
Share
One of the questions I hear most often from people thinking about writing a letter to someone or having a pen pal is this:
"What do I even write about?"
If you've ever sat down with a blank sheet of paper, a favorite pen, and every intention of writing a letter, only to stare at the blank page for ten minutes, you are certainly not alone.
The good news is that the best letters aren't filled with exciting adventures or life-changing news. In fact, they're usually quite the opposite.
The letters people treasure most are often the ones that simply share everyday life.
A letter is really just a conversation on paper. Instead of chatting over coffee, you're inviting someone to spend a few minutes with you through your words. And just like a good conversation, it doesn't have to be complicated.
If you're wondering what to write in your next letter, here are ten ideas to help you get started.
1. Tell them about your day.
You don't need to tell them every detail, but give them a little glimpse into your world. Maybe you spent the morning in the garden, baked banana bread, visited your grandchildren, or finally finished a good book. Ordinary days often make the best stories because they're the moments that make up our lives.
2. Describe the season where you live.
Is summer beginning to fade into autumn? Are daffodils blooming? Did you wake up to the first snowfall?
One of the joys of having a pen pal is getting a window into someone else's corner of the world.
3. Share something that made you smile.
It might have been a funny conversation, a bird building a nest outside your window, fresh peaches from the farmers market, or a kind gesture from a stranger.
Small joys have a wonderful way of spreading happiness.
4. Recommend something you've been enjoying.
Tell them about a favorite book, a recipe you've made several times, a movie you loved, or even a local coffee shop if you're writing to someone nearby.
Recommendations often lead to great conversations.
5. Share a favorite memory.
Childhood stories, family traditions, holiday memories, or adventures from years gone by all help your pen pal get to know you a little better.
They'll often respond with memories of their own.
6. Tell them what you're learning.
Maybe you've started quilting, learned to make sourdough bread, planted your first vegetable garden, or discovered a lesson God has been teaching you recently.
Learning keeps conversations fresh and gives your pen pal something new to ask about next time.
7. Ask thoughtful questions.
A wonderful letter isn't only about talking; it also invites the other person to share.
Ask about their favorite season, what they're reading, how they spend a Saturday afternoon, or what brings them joy this time of year.
Curiosity is one of the greatest gifts you can offer another person.
8. Write about simple things you noticed this week.
Perhaps the fireflies appeared for the first time this summer. Maybe the hummingbirds finally returned. Perhaps your kitchen smelled like cinnamon after baking, or you watched a thunderstorm roll across the fields from your front porch.
These little glimpses into your world help the other person really connect with you.
9. Share what you're looking forward to.
A family gathering, a vacation, planting the garden next spring, celebrating Christmas, or simply enjoying cooler weather.
Looking ahead gives your pen pal another chance to celebrate with you when your next letter arrives.
10. Simply tell them you were thinking about them.
Sometimes we worry so much about writing the perfect letter that we forget the real reason we're writing in the first place.
Your pen pal isn't expecting a famous author.
They're simply hoping to hear from you.
A few honest paragraphs written with kindness will always mean more than perfectly polished words.
The Best Letters Are Simply Honest
If there's one thing I hope you'll remember, it's this:
You don't have to live an extraordinary life to write a meaningful letter.
Some of the most treasured letters are filled with ordinary Tuesdays, favorite recipes, blooming flowers, answered prayers, family stories, and quiet moments on the porch.
Those everyday moments are what help friendships grow.
So don't wait until you have something exciting to say.
Write about today.
Someone, somewhere, will be glad you did.
